Carmel International Film Festival

Two weekends ago, I had the opportunity to work with the Carmel International Film Festival. Co-founders, Thomas Burns and Erin Clarke, run this five-day event. My crew and I took pictures for two days of the event.

On the first night, we set up in the main lobby at the Cypress Inn, where the VIP reception was being hosted. The room was fairly small, so we had limited space to set up our lights and backdrop, but we made it work. The day before, I re-discovered a couple vintage cameras in my storage room in the studio, and a projector, which I used as props for the set.

On the second night, we were at the beach of Carmel. The wind was a bit of a concern when we initially came to set up, but luckily it died down once it was time to start shooting. We got some great portraits of directors, actors and attendees right at sunset.

It was a lot of fun and it was wonderful meeting so many talented artists, such as the screenwriter for Diablo, Carlos De Los Rios, and director, Lawrence Roeck.

I can’t wait to add these portraits to my portfolio!

Adventure with Photographer Daniel Castro

Two weeks ago, I had the chance to break from reality and head up into the wilderness with my buddy and fellow photographer, Daniel Castro. How do two photographers stay entertained? Have a mini-photoshoot, of course.

Dan started his career as graphic designer and then moved over full-time to photography. He is now an established advertising and fashion photographer based out of New York. His work has received recognition from Archive Magazine both in 2014 and 2015 as ‘200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide’ and ‘200 Best Digital Artists’.

We decided to take portraits on our trip and Dan came up with the dressed-shower concept. After a challenging hike uphill before sunset, we found the perfect lighting for the shoot.

I’m looking forward to adding these portraits to my website.

Shoot with Dan Diaz and Diablo Magazine

I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Diablo Magazine to do a portrait shoot with Dan Diaz. His terminally ill wife made headline news when she and her husband decided to move to Oregon so she could end her suffering.

His wife, Brittany, loved California and wanted to die there, but at the time assisted suicide (for the terminally-ill) was illegal. Before she passed away, she let her story hit the news. It created a huge discussion among the media and religious groups about the ethics of her decision.

Before passing away, Brittany asked her husband to fight for other terminally-ill patients in California, to die with dignity in their home state. Diaz was able to fulfill his promise to her. Last week, California state Governor Jerry Brown passed the right-to-die bill on October 5th.

Diablo magazine wrote a wonderful article on Diaz and his wife’s story. Warning – It will be hard to keep your eyes dry by the end of it.

I’m honored to be a part of this project. I look forward to adding these portraits to my portfolio.

Morning Streak

Here is the fourth installment of my ‘Naked Series’.

While visiting Southern California, I decided to make a quick trip to Joshua tree.  The desolate and beautiful landscape was the perfect place…. to get naked!

I was alone in the desert except for the occasional rattlesnake. Yikes. Thankfully, I made it out of Joshua tree without encountering any snakes or traumatized hikers.

I began this series last December on a trip to Mt. Talmapais.  From there, I bared it all at Point Reyes and in Quebec. Curious to know where I will undress next? Subscribe to the blog for updates.

Hidden Gem of San Francisco

I recently visited San Francisco’s Public Glass for a photoshoot.

This is one of the many hidden gems of San Francisco. This is a wonderful nonprofit organization that supports and celebrates the art of glass blowing.

It is mainly a public access glass studio and school. They offer workshops for everyone that is interested in learning more about glass blowing. They even have programs for the youth!

Aside from the classes and workshops, they also have night events, such as, ‘Hot Glass Cold Beer’. This is their most popular event, which combines glass demonstrations, live music, craft beer, and good food.

I’m happy to add these photos to my portfolio.

Photoshoot in Little Italy

Here are some photos from a test shoot taken in North Beach last March.

Our producer, Lisa Vortman, helped organize this shoot and secure the location. We did the entire shoot inside the Public Barber Salon in Little Italy.

My model for the day was Maya Schuller. She is extremely talented, beautiful, and wonderful to work with!

We arrived at the location late morning. The hair stylist, Nicole + Taylor, and makeup artist,  Olga Pirmatova, went quickly to work making sure that Maya was ready for the shoot.

While they were prepping Maya, My assistant, Marine Terlizzi, and I prepared the lights and discussed the shots needed.

As for the wardrobe, we had the help of Lindsey Diruscio and her lovely assistant, Holly Coley.

It was a great day and an honor to work with such talented artists. I’m happy to add these photos to my portraits.

Sunday Shoot at Baker Beach

We recently had a fun Sunday shoot in Baker Beach. The plan was to create fun summer lifestyle images at the beach. The weather in San Francisco is always a fickle beast, but it gave us decent weather to work with (a little foggy, but we weren’t complaining).

We began the day in the parking lot. While the photo crew went scouting for the best locations, the wardrobe stylist, Anne Kunisaki, and makeup stylist, Olga Pirmatova, went to work on prepping the models.

As always, Anne did a great job with the wardrobe styling.  She brought multiple outfits and props that worked with the summer beach vibe we wanted. Olga also did an outstanding job. Our models looked flawless!

And of course, big thanks to our producer, Lisa Vortman, for coordinating the shoot!

My favorite part of the day was taking the last photo. I wanted to shoot the front of the blue convertible in action. It was a bit risky since I had to rig my car and keep the backdoor open while my car was moving. Happy to say no equipment was damaged in the process. 🙂

All around awesome Sunday shoot. I’m happy to add this to my lifestyle work.
